WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO TFN
A majority of the youth we work with are teens who have been in the foster care system for a long time and have experienced several moves. It is not uncommon for a youth to come to our program with 20 or even 30+ different placements. This is an area of foster care that is relatively well researched.
What we know is that moves are damaging. With each move comes additional relational disconnection and the not so subtle message of rejection. Externalizing behaviors tend to increase with additional moves - even if there were not any of these kinds of behaviors when the youth first came into the foster system. We also know that with each move it sets the child or youth back academically about 6 months.
